What does an orthopedic technician do?

What does an orthopedic technician do? Not everyone knows that in addition to the profession of orthopedic surgeon, there is another profession – orthopedic technician. What does an orthopedic technician do and where can we meet him?

How to become an orthopedic technician?

To become an orthopedic technician, it is usually necessary to complete a specialized course. Although medical research is not required, as is the case with an orthopedic surgeon career, such courses are most commonly found in medical training facilities. So usually it’s just medical colleges.
These courses usually last two years. The good news is that many medical schools offer many types of orthopedic technician programs. these are:

  • daily mode,
  • weekend mode,
  • night mode.

Increasingly, we also find state-funded courses. This means that we do not have to pay tuition fees. There are many places where we can study this course for free. This type of course is most easily found in large cities, although it can also be effective in small towns.

What skills does an orthopedic technician have?

During the two-year studies, orthopedic technicians acquire many skills needed to perform this specialty. The scope of science is very wide. The course program even includes issues related to running your own business in the medical industry and training in the use of computer programs that can facilitate such activities. Since the profession requires communication skills, training also includes language learning. It is both a foreign professional language of choice and a sign language. Of course, the program also includes a large number of courses directly related to the major. Starting from the outline of psychology and ethics to exercise therapy. Most courses are devoted to understanding anatomy, physiology, and pathology. There are also first aid kits.

Due to the nature of the profession, there are also courses devoted to orthopedic biomechanics, machining techniques used in the profession and issues related to orthopedics and paradisciplines.

After completing the program, school graduates receive a Diploma of Completion, as well as a Diploma confirming professional qualifications. It is important that such documents are published in Polish and English. Equally important is that it complies with the so-called European passport – only such a document can confirm that eligibility has been obtained in accordance with applicable EU standards. We reserve the right to request such documentation if we decide to provide the services of an orthopedic technician.

Where can we meet orthopedic technicians?

There are many places to pursue a career as an orthopedic technician. An example of such facilities in the private sector are private orthopedic clinics, but in public facilities financed by the National Health Fund, orthopedists are also often employed. Especially people working in this industry are often found in hospital orthopedics or rehabilitation departments. Another popular workplace for orthopedic technicians is a medical rehabilitation facility or medical equipment facility. These objects are often present in our lives when we encounter the need for surgical procedures, such as meniscus arthroscopy or hip replacement.

What does an orthopedic technician do?

We already know that the professions of an orthopedic technician and an orthopedic surgeon are different – just explain what they are. Well, orthopedic technicians don’t really treat injuries or other conditions. If we need arthroscopy or endoprosthesis – it will not be performed by a technician, but by an orthopedist. The work of an orthopedic technician is completely different. Orthopedic technicians first deal with the design of various types of orthopedic and rehabilitation equipment. The tasks of the technician also include planning and implementation of broadly understood tasks related to the delivery of such devices to patients.

In all of the above activities, technicians have to consider many things. They include knowledge in the field of physiognomy, anatomy, pathophysiology of the musculoskeletal system as well as specialist knowledge in the field of psychology and ethics. Therefore, all these issues are included in the training program for persons applying for a license to practice.

Psychology is especially important, as is learning languages. Often, orthopedic technicians are also tasked with connecting with people with disabilities and their families. Understanding the environment of people in need of orthopedic support or rehabilitation is often essential to designing the right devices that can restore or improve the quality of life.

However, design is not everything. The task of the orthopedic technician is also to instruct the person using the device how to use it correctly. Nevertheless, it is important to provide information on how to store and maintain the equipment and the frequency of inspection and possible replacement of related parts.
